James Lick Middle School Report: Keeping It Real

Looking as crisp as autumn leaves in their sharp black and white uniforms, students returning to James Lick School last month found a clean campus with healthy new trees, 11 new staff members on hand to guide them, and a new theme, "Keeping It Real and Relevant." An enthusiastic group of parents turned out for Back to School Night on Sept. 12. A new Parent Resource Room (Room 107) is now open daily, providing books, computers, and training in basic computer skills.

Summer Highlights

The Families and Friends of James Lick rafted up the beautiful Amazon River in Peru, where our students experienced sleeping under mosquito netting in huts and eating yucca fries, tamales cooked in banana leaves, and chicken steamed in bamboo. The Families and Friends group will travel to Portugal and Spain next summer.

All five members of the James Lick Drum Group earned scholarships to attend a drum camp in Hawaii over the summer as a result of their work with the group.

The Benjamin family and other neighbors kept the school grounds neat and watered the new trees donated by a neighbor on Castro Street and a math teacher, Andrew Grimstad.

Fall Events

Music in the Schools Night on Sept. 27 featured performances by students from Lowell High School and the School of the Arts, with a deejay from KCSM. A Halloween dance will conclude the month with a colorful display of costumes.

Students and Neighbors Meet for Lunch

The James Lick Community Alliance (formerly the Merchants' Alliance) welcomes neighbors, parents, merchants, and business and professional persons to join our student council representatives for lunch at 12:30 p.m. on the last Friday of each month during the school year. Our next meeting is scheduled for Oct. 25. Please call the school for details and to confirm dates and times if you'd like to attend.

Is There a Picture of Carlos Santana in Your Attic?

A decade ago, all of our treasured pictures, yearbooks and other memorabilia were lost when several neighborhood campuses were relocated for structural improvements. Please help us recreate the rich history of our beautiful school and its many distinguished alumni, including musicians Carlos and Jorge Santana and actor Benjamin Bratt. If you know anyone who has photos, yearbooks, programs, newsletters, stories, anecdotes, school songs, cheers, and other materials to loan, donate, or share, please contact Gail Kocourek, Room 107, James Lick Middle School, (415) 695-5675, ext. 3107. P.S.We still need volunteer tutors and mentors--and ping-pong equipment!
