Muni Fares Go Up Sept. 1

Noe Valley bus riders may be lugging around more pocket change this month. That's because the San Francisco Municipal Railway has just raised fares by a quarter. In case you missed the announcement, the adult fare to ride the city's buses, trolleys, and streetcars went from $1.00 to $1.25, starting Sept. 1, 2003. It costs more to ride the cable cars, too. Here are the new single-fare rates:

Adults (ages 1864) $1.25
On cable cars $3.00

Discount (Seniors age 65+ and
disabled persons) 35¢
On cable cars $3.00

Reduced Evening Cable Car Fare, daily from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. $1.00

Youths (ages 517) 35¢

Children (under age 5) free

Rates for the new monthly and weekly fare passes are as follows:

Fast Pass (adult monthly) $45.00

Senior Pass (senior monthly) $10.00

Monthly Sticker for valid Discount Card $10.00

Youth Pass (youth monthly) $10.00

Weekly Pass (+ $1 for cable car service) $12.00

Also note that as of Sept. 1, Muni tokens will be sold in rolls of 10 for $10.50. Be aware as well that transfers are neither issued nor accepted on the cable cars.

Tipping the driver is also not encouraged. However, a smile never hurts.

Happy trails and enjoy your commute. h
