Thanks to local historian Bill Yenne many of the vintage photos in the Noe Valley Archives at the Noe ValleySally Brunn Library have been compiled in a new book, San Francisco's Noe Valley (Arcadia Publishing, $19.99). Among them is this gem taken in 1923, which shows an adventurous young woman who had motored up the steep Duncan Street hill from Sanchez to Noe Street. Back then, Noe Street was paved in gravel and Duncan in cobblestone. Also, note that the photo was taken before Works Progress Administration built a wall in the 1930s, closing off Duncan Street at Noe Street. Photo courtesy of the Noe Valley Archives
