Grading Supervisor Wiener

Editor:

Having read your report card for Supervisor Wiener (“Good Report Card for Supervisor Scott Wiener,” October 2012) , I have to express my disagreement. Though our supervisor may have done a few commendable actions since being elected, he has failed to address the main issue facing our city: City Hall’s inability to live within its means and control the ever-increasing budget and payroll. Rather, Supervisor Wiener is endlessly pushing bond measures, that is borrowing more money, to supposedly maintain and repair our parks and streets instead of making the necessary budget re-allocations.

If our city continues in this direction under the leadership of politicians like Supervisor Wiener, the financial crisis facing City College is a mere harbinger for the city as a whole.

Fire Stories

Editor:

Thanks for the excellent article in the November issue by Tim Innes (“Two Families Rising from the Ashes of Noe Street Fire”).

Heather Eyrand and family and Doreen King and family certainly went through a trying ordeal with fire! However, the loving support they received is wonderful and probably continues!

I know we all value our police and fire department workers, yet many may not have read Dennis Smith’s 1972 book Report from Engine Co. 82. Smith is a former New York City fireman—a classic first book.

Also, I recommend The New Centurions novel from 1971 by Joseph Wambaugh. Both are memorable and have lasting value.

Poem

The sidewalk’s now dry for a change,

Offers mere webs of dark cracks.

Trees’ leaves bright green by streetlight,

Cars’ hoods glisten frail dew…

My dog’s and my footbeats all I can hear,

I turn to return, find all is still so.

   The bright bite of Christmas

   Once more distracting

   From winter’s long night.

All is so still.
