The Library Changes Guard…and Hours

By Heather World

The Noe Valley/Sally Brunn Library has a new manager, and don’t be surprised if you find her outside the ornate walls of the 1916 Beaux Arts building at 451 Jersey St.

“Part of what I need to do is try to get the pulse of the neighborhood,” says Irene Lee, who managed the Golden Gate Valley branch library for five years before moving to the Noe branch. “I want to find out the neighborhood places, go and introduce myself, and invite them to give suggestions on what they’d like their library to be.”

Lee’s goal is to make the library a welcoming place for the community, and she hopes to build collaboration between Noe Valleyans and library staff, she says.

Lee started in mid-April, taking over from manager Alice McCloud. McCloud retired after managing the branch for seven years. She now lives in Florida.

Meanwhile, the San Francisco Library Commission is in the process of making changes to hours at its 27 branches around the city. In the Noe Valley Library’s case, the Library proposes to add eight hours on Mondays but cut morning hours on Saturdays and shorten Tuesday and Thursday evenings (by three hours and one hour, respectively). Also, hours on Wednesday would change from 1 to 9 p.m. to noon to 8 p.m.

For more details, go to the commission’s May 16 agenda page at www.sfpl.org and click on “Assessment and Proposed Modification” of library service hours. That will take you to a 43-page document describing the rationale and recommendations for all branch changes.

To comment on the proposal, call 415-557-4233, email Commission Secretary Sue Blackman at sblackman@sfpl.org, or attend the next Library Commission meeting, June 6, 4:30 p.m., in Koret Auditorium at the Main Branch, 100 Larkin St.
