REPORT FROM INGLESIDE STATION

The following police blotter covers incidents reported April 11 to May 10, 2011, in Upper Noe Valley—the area roughly bounded by Cesar Chavez, Guerrero, 30th, and Diamond streets. The incidents were culled from newsletters produced by Capt. Louis Cassanego of Ingle­side Police Station. The log may not include all crimes reported during the period.

 

April 12, 7:30 a.m., 30th at Dolores, Battery: Officer Frisk and Reserve Officer Martinez responded to a report of a battery on a Muni bus. Victim advised that he boarded the bus and attempted to take a seat in the rear area, when the individual he was going to sit next to pushed him aside telling him he couldn’t sit there. Victim gave a detailed description of the individual, who had already exited the bus. The individual was located on another Muni railway by Sgt. Escobar. The victim made a positive identification and signed a citizen’s arrest. The suspect was cited for the battery. #110296993

April 12, 1 a.m., 29th at Church, Theft from Vehicle: Victim called 311 to report that he parked and secured his vehicle, and when he returned, noticed items were missing from the vehicle. #116046665

April 12, 6 a.m., 1400 block of Noe, Theft from Vehicle: Victim called 311 to report he parked and secured his vehicle, and when he returned, found his side window smashed and items taken. #116046615

April 12, 9 a.m., 28th at Sanchez, Theft from Vehicle: Victim called 311 to report he parked and secured his vehicle, and when he returned, found a window smashed and various items taken. #116046637

April 12, 10 a.m., Noe at 28th, Theft from Vehicle: Victim called 311 to report she parked and secured her vehicle, and when she returned, found a window smashed and items taken. #116046621

April 14, 9 a.m., 600 block of 27th, Theft, Vehicle Strip: Officer Naval was dispatched to a report of a theft from a vehicle. The victim stated that she returned to her vehicle and discovered that the air bag had been taken from the steering wheel. There were no signs of forced entry on the vehicle, and the vehicle was locked. #110303811

April 18, 4:12 p.m., San Jose Ave. at 30th, Possession of an Assault Weapon: Officers Daggett and Padilla were sent to investigate a suspect who was brandishing a rifle at people. The officers were working undercover at the time. As the officers drove by the location, they observed a subject who matched the suspect description. The officers watched the suspect as he tried to hide by a fence. Because the officers were able to maintain visual contact with the suspect, they saw him take off a backpack and then pull a gun out and toss it over the fence. By this time, Officer Murphy had arrived on scene. The officers converged on the suspect with weapons drawn. The suspect took off running to avoid capture, to no avail. The suspect was taken into custody a short distance away. The officers recovered an assault rifle with a scope. The suspect was arrested and booked. #110315822

April 18, 8:15 p.m., 1500 block of Church, Robbery: Officers Apodaca and Gabriel were sent to investigate a robbery. The victim told the officers that she was waiting for the bus and decided to check on her phone to see when the next one would be arriving. That was when an unknown suspect grabbed her purse, which was on her shoulder. The suspect could not get the purse, so he grabbed her phone and fled the area. #110316472

April 20, 12:57 a.m., Cesar Chavez at Sanchez, Drunk Driving: Officer Seavey was patrolling the district when his attention was drawn to a vehicle that did not stop at a stop sign. The officer followed the vehicle and observed it as another stop sign was ignored. The officer saw the car drive over the double yellow lines towards oncoming traffic and pulled the car over. The officer approached the car and spoke to the driver. The driver smelled as if she had been drinking. The officer then requested that the driver submit to a field sobriety test. The driver did not successfully perform the test and was placed under arrest. The driver chose to take a breath test. The results of the test showed the blood alcohol content to be .182 (CA legal limit is 0.08). The driver was then booked for drunk driving and the other traffic violations. #110320150

April 22, 8:30 a.m., 1900 block of Castro, Burglary: Officer Khan and Leong responded to a call of a burglary. Victim told them she locked and secured her home when she left; when she returned, she noticed her back door was ajar, a window in the kitchen had been smashed, boxes and other items had been moved, and various items had been taken. She had not given anyone permission to enter the premises. Officers searched the area for any latent fingerprint evidence, to no avail. #110327849

April 22, 10 p.m., 200 block of 27th, Fraud: Victim came to Ingleside Station to report a fraud. Victim stated that she received a phone call from a car dealership regarding her application for credit to purchase a vehicle. Victim stated that she did not fill out any such application. Victim had also been given a credit alert through her bank that someone was possibly using her identity. Victim wanted to file a report but could provide no further information on the suspect. #110327736

April 22, 4 a.m., Dolores at 30th, Traffic Accident

April 26, 10:30 a.m., 1500 Diamond, Vandalism: Officer Kobold prepared a report regarding a vandalism incident. The victim told the officer that an unknown suspect broke the back window of his car. #110323182

April 29, 10:41 p.m., Church at 27th, Robbery: Officer Hom and several other SFPD units responded to a report of a robbery. The victim stated that a suspect yanked her cell phone out of her hand while she was on a Muni bus. The suspect fled and the victim chased after him. At one point, a witness yelled at the suspect to give the victim back her cell phone. The suspect placed the cell phone on a garbage can and continued to run. Officers detained the suspect nearby, and he was positively identified and taken into custody. #110348920

May 4, 8:03 p.m., 100 block of Day, Burglary: Officers Ferronato and Benavidez responded to a report of a burglary. The victim returned to his apartment and found his front door ajar and items missing. #110359682

 

REPORT FROM MISSION STATION

The tally includes most but not all incidents occurring April 11 to May 10 in the area bordered by Grand View, 20th, Guerrero, and ­Cesar Chavez streets. April 14, 6:30 p.m., 1300 block of Noe, Bicycle Theft: Officer Cvetovac Jr. responded to a call about a stolen bicycle. Victim said her white “Dolce Comp” Model X3 bike, valued at $1,800, was stolen after the garage door was left open by a neighbor. #110305005

April 15, 3:30 a.m., 200 block of Clipper, Domestic Violence: Victim came to Mission Station to report that her ex-boyfriend of two weeks had gone to her job, induced her to come out to the street, and then shoved, head-butted, and knocked her to the ground while yelling obscenities and             threats. A judge issued the victim an emergency protective order. #110308532

April 15, 4:02 p.m., 3800 block of 24th, Theft, Possession of a Switchblade: Officer Sands and Cathey responded to the scene of a shoplifting incident on 24th Street. A local store owner reported that a suspicious man had been in the shop and then left. Soon after, the staff noticed that a messenger-style bag was missing. An employee went outside and saw the suspect carrying the bag and trying to board a bus. The employee asked for the bag back, but the suspect refused, saying it was his. The bus was held until police arrived. The suspect was placed under arrest after police determined the bag (and a pair of gloves inside it) were stolen property. Police also found a switchblade knife in the suspect’s pocket. #110307631

April 15, 5:51 p.m., 1200 block of Dolores, Possession of Methamphetamine for Sale:Sergeant Healy and Officers Fegan, Guerrero, Richardson, and Sanchez executed a search war­rant that resulted in the arrest of a suspected drug dealer and the seizure of quantities of methamphetamine, GHB, and psilocybin. #110307772

April 22, 4:45 p.m., 22nd & Castro, Burglary: A burglar entered the victim’s home and stole a camera. A suspect was arrested a short time later during the commission of another burglary. #110327805

April 30, 6:55 p.m., 24th & Castro, Graffiti Vandalism/Resisting Arrest: As Sergeant Johnson walked out of a 24th Street shop (in full police uniform), he saw a Muni 48 bus stopped in the bus zone. He then observed a “tagger” walk up to the rear of the bus and tag its side with a marker. He yelled out to the suspect, “Hey! Police! Come over here!” The young man looked at the sergeant and ran. Sgt. Johnson gave chase, with citizens pointing out the suspect’s direction. Other officers came to assist, yelling “Police! Stop!” The suspect continued to run, evading police and ignoring their commands. When police caught up with the youth, they tried to handcuff him, but he resisted. Police sprayed the suspect with pepper spray and, after a struggle on the ground, took him into custody. The suspect, a 15-year-old juvenile with a prior graffiti arrest involving a Muni bus, was cited for vandalism and resisting arrest. He was treated at San Francisco General Hospital for facial abrasions and released to his family. #110351155

May 2, 3:57 a.m., 24th & Castro, Attempted Theft: According to Mission Captain Greg Corrales’ May 6 newsletter: “Two brazen, bumbling buffoons battered an ATM machine in frantic, futile attempts to break into it.” #110354579

May 2, 3:22 p.m., 24th & Church, Intoxicated Juveniles: Officers Lombardo and Salvador responded to a call requesting a well-being check on a young girl. Officers found three juveniles on the ground at the J-line bus stop median. The 16-year-old had slurred speech and showed signs of being under the influence of an unknown substance. She was taken by ambulance to Davies Hospital, and her parents were contacted. The two male juveniles with her were advised about drinking and urinating on the bus stop. They were released to their families. #110356008

May 3, 3:30 p.m., unit block of Fountain, Explosive Device Located: The SFPD’s bomb squad (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) responded to a call from a woman who said she’d found a hand grenade in a house she had recently purchased. She was cleaning the home when she discovered the device in a bedroom cabinet. The bomb squad found the pin still intact in the World War II–era grenade. The SFPD closed the street, and an ambulance and fire truck stood by while the hand grenade was safely removed. No one was injured. #110358690

May 4, 6:30 p.m., 1000 block of Castro, Theft from Building: Officer Anderson responded to a call of a theft. The victim said she returned home to find that $13,330 in jewelry, including wedding and engagement rings, were missing from her jewelry box. #110368031

May 5, 5 a.m., Clipper & Dolores, Theft from a Locked Vehicle: The victim reported to responding Officer Chow that the $1,500 hard top on his red Miata convertible, which had been locked and parked on the street, had been unclipped and stolen. #110366289

May 7, 11:25 a.m., 23rd & Fair Oaks, Theft: While shopping, a woman put her purse down on the floor beside her. A short time later she discovered her purse was gone. #110369716

May 8, 6:25 a.m., 300 block of Jersey, Stalking: Sergeant Gilmore and Inspector Lee arrested a man who had been accused of stalking a 53-year-old victim since she was in high school. Her family had alerted police on April 23 that the suspect left a voicemail containing a death threat. #110330795

Police Borders

Noe Valley is split between two San Francisco police jurisdictions—Mission Police District and Ingleside Police District—with Cesar Chavez Street as the dividing line. Mission Station covers the northern half of the neighborhood, while Ingleside patrols the southern half. Both districts invite citizens to attend police community meetings, held monthly. Mission Police District holds meetings on the last Tuesday of the month, 6 p.m., at Mission Station, 630 Valencia Street near 17th Street. Ingleside’s community meetings take place on the third Tuesday of the month, 7 p.m., at Ingleside Station, 1 Sgt. John V. Young Lane.
