April 2000

Historians and natives have long debated the origin of the giant totemic heads atop Billy Goat Hill at 30th and Castro streets. But after a recent symposium at the Scribbledoodle Academy on 24th Street, they may have solved the mystery. It seems the heads were transported in pastel baskets from Passover Island, the homely younger sister of Easter Island in the Pacific, by one of the canine-worshipping Carryout tribes called the To-Go's. Heavily influenced by Matisse and Ron MacDonald, these iconic busts typify the bulbous art of the nomadic puppophiles, even down to the unmistakable bow tie. Originally an accessory worn around the necks of Croatian troops in the 17th century, this tie motif can still be seen in pasta. Photo by Charles Kennard
